SAFTI MI Library is conducting a Viewpoint Talk on the topic, 'The Rakhine Crisis : Choices Ahead for ASEAN’.

Dr Alistair D. B. Cook will be giving the above talk on ‘The Rakhine Crisis : Choices Ahead for ASEAN’. He is the Coordinator of the Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief Programme and Research Fellow at the Centre for Non-Traditional Security Studies (NTS Centre), S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies (RSIS), Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in Singapore.

This presentation covers the current humanitarian crisis that faces Bangladesh and Myanmar and its wider global and regional implications notably for the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN). The current outflow of people from Northern Rakhine state in Myanmar’s west has topped 500,000 joining an estimated 300,000 displaced people in Bangladesh from earlier periods of violence. More displacement is likely to come under current conditions in Northern Rakhine state where an active militant group, the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA) have provoked a disproportionate military response which has led to the current humanitarian crisis. However, this is not a new issue and reflecting on previous crises, understanding the root causes of the violence and the ingredients for complex humanitarian emergencies will inform the audience of the choices ahead for Bangladesh, Myanmar, ASEAN and the wider international community to address both immediate and longer-term considerations to address the Rakhine Crisis.
