Wearing T-shirts specially produced for the event, it included this special slogan printed on the back: ‘Old Soldiers, Young Hearts, Healthy Minds’.

Coordinator for the veterans’ participation SLTC (RET) James Suresh said: “It was heartening to see so many veterans participating in this year’s SSBR & AHM. Some also got their spouses to join them.

“This year we conducted weekly practices at the Toa Payoh Stadium in the evenings over five weeks leading up to the event. The practice sessions seem to have paid off as quite a few of our runners managed to maintain or better their timings for the 5, 10 and 21km categories.”

SAFVL Management Committee member SLTC (RET) Suresh chairs the Healthy Lifestyle and Sports Committee.

A regular participant at the SSBR & AHM is LTC (RET) Andrew Tan Chee Seng who usually runs the longer distances. In fact he had signed up to do the 10km run this year but a recent medical condition forced him to opt for a slower pace. He did the 5km walk, paced throughout by his attentive wife Mary.

Said LTC (RET) Andrew Tan: “It’s nice to have my wife walking with me and looking out for me. There were also other thoughtful friends and comrades who constantly kept me in their sight. It was altogether a great outing. Kudos to the organizers.”
