Today’s threats and challenges target the hearts and minds of our people

Speaking at a Konfrontasi memorial event on 10 March 2018, Brigadier-General (Retired) Winston Toh, President of the Singapore Armed Forces Veterans League, said that the threats and complex challenges we face today, target the hearts and minds of our people.

He added that we must continue to strengthen Total Defence.

“More than ever before, we must all play our part, to build a nation that is united and resilient. We must be prepared for what may come our way,” he said.

The memorial ceremony – the fifth since 2014 – was held at the Konfrontasi Memorial opposite The Cathay Building, located at Dhoby Ghaut Green on Orchard Road.

The event commemorated the day in March 1965 when a most deadly attack took place at the MacDonald House nearby, where a bomb planted by saboteurs exploded and three people died and 33 more were injured. During this dark period, more than 40 terror attacks on civilians were carried out throughout Singapore.

“Never again must we let something like Konfrontasi happen to us,” said BG Toh.

BG Toh added that while the saying goes "Time heals all wounds", it may be so for some, but not for those who have lost loved ones and comrades in arms.

Among those at the ceremony were veterans from the First and Second Battalions, Singapore Infantry Regiment who fought during Konfrontasi, veterans from the Home Team, family members of victims and survivors of the bombing of MacDonald House, Singapore Ministry of Defence and Singapore Armed Forces representatives, SAF veterans, National Cadet Corps members and students from Loyang View Secondary School.
