“Huat Ah!” And with this loud and energetic chorus from some 60 members and their guests, they vigorously tossed ‘Yusheng’ (raw fish salad) to herald better times in the Year of the Rooster.

The traditional Chinese New Year gathering organized by the SAF Veterans League for its members, was held on 10 Feb 2017 at SAFRA Toa Payoh. It came complete with ‘Cai Shen Ye’ (the Chinese God of Wealth), a role gamely played by a non-Chinese member, all in the spirit of multiculturalism.

Two students, Ms Teo Wei Ling and Ms Marianne Wang Yining from St Joseph’s Institution International School and Tao Nan Secondary School respectively, were special guest performers at the event. They played the Yangqin with so much commitment and feeling that they won over the audience immediately.

Next was another performance by pipa specialist Mr Chin Yen Chien, 40, who started to learn the instrument at the age of 11 and has won many awards throughout his career. And to oblige a special request, Yen Chien also accompanied a member on the pipa as the member rendered the Elvis Presley’s hit ‘Can’t Help Falling In Love’.

The evening ended with karaoke singing. The organizing committee thanked everyone for supporting the gathering and making the event a success.

Till next year, have a great Year of the Rooster!
